Alleghenies Backpacking

Again Troop 8 is venturing to the mighty Alleghenie Mountains.  This is our annual 2 day backpacking trip on the Minister Creek Hiking loop in Central Pensylvania.  The Minister Creek Trail is a 7 mile long loop through the heart of the Alleghenie National Forest.  Along this beautiful trail are 4 major rock piles (large piles of boulders, ideal for bouldering and caving) and a scenic overlook over the Minister Creek Valley.  As you hike your patrol will decide which rock piles to stop at for snack breaks and additional fun.  Each kid will carry their own backpack containing their personal gear and a fraction of their patrol's group cookgear. Everyone will also get their own map set containing both a treail map and a topographical map of the area.  On the pre-trips everyone should have been taught how to properly read a topo map and will be quized along the trail by their patrol leaders.  Along with the amazing views on the hike, we will also enjoy the amazing campsites we get to to stay at.  These sites include an old trainyard turntable from the days of coal mining and a rustic site at the fork of the creeks.  Since there are no water pumps along this trail, each patrol will carry some iodine water purification tablets which will sanitize creek water in only 30 minutes.

To be a part of this trip though you will need to have come on one or both of the "Intro to Backpacking" weekends.  These weekends are designed to teach the younger scouts all the essential backpacking knoledge before the trip and to work out any pack or boot fit issues ahead of time.  If you have any questions regarding the trip or prerequisites please contact the listed trip leaders.
